This symposium will focus on the needs of learners in the 21st century with hands-on presentations and workshops. In the exhibit area, partners will feature innovative instructional technology tools and services. Attendees will include teachers, site and district administrators, and other education technology leaders from Los Angeles and other counties, CTAP Regions and the California Department of Education’s Technology Office.

Use Excel to analyze student achievement data collected by district information systems like Data Director or through local classroom assessments. Learn how to setup spreadsheets to allow better analysis through the use of Autofilter and Pivot Table features to sort, to filter, and to analyze information. Requirements: Basic familiarity with Excel spreadsheets.

Creating great-looking documents is simple with Pages 09. Pages is both a streamlined word processor and an easy-to-use page layout tool. It allows you to be a writer and designer all in one easy-to-use application for lessons plans, reports and so much more!

This course is designed for teachers, school library staff and parents.  The focus will be upon literacy concepts in pre-k and primary grades. You will receive information on presenting materials on a child’s place in his/her community, as well as knowledge and awareness of narrative skills. Additionally, you will be given age-appropriate booklists and children’s books to use at home, in the library, or in the classroom.

Engaging Kindergarten through Grade 4 students in read aloud activities and selection of age-appropriate materials. This course is designed for parents, school library staff, and teachers. Focus will be Cinderella Tales From Around the World.

Spreadsheets are much easier to create and work with than most people think and are a powerful tool for classroom teachers. In this class, participants will begin by making a simple spreadsheet then learn how to format it, customize the layout, add formulas, create charts and graphs and to analyze data. We will also use Excel to create a board game and to set up seating charts and a daily planner. Participants will receive a step-by-step handout with pictures and directions for each project. This class is designed for Level 1 to intermediate computer users and will have a relaxed, easy-to-follow pace. The class can be taken as part of the “Getting Started” series or as a stand-alone class. The other classes in this series are Getting Started with Word and Getting Started with PowerPoint.  

Create a Back-to-School Night PowerPoint that will impress parents and showcase your class. We will build the whole presentation starting with basic slide design and formatting then add clip art, photos, animation, sound and video. Learn tips on how to really engage your audience as well as how to avoid common presentation pitfalls.  Participants will receive a step-by-step handout with pictures and directions for each project. This class is designed for Level 1 to intermediate computer users and will have a relaxed, easy-to-follow pace. The class can be taken as part of the “Getting Started” series or as a stand-alone class. The other classes in this series are Getting Started with Excel and Getting Started with Word.  

Create a classroom newsletter, a Back-to-School Night brochure, award certificates, a flyer and more quickly and easily using Microsoft Office Word. Participants will also learn how to use the mail merge feature to create personalized letters and envelopes with a simple data base. Participants will receive a step-by-step handout with pictures and directions for each project. This class is designed for Level 1 to intermediate computer users and will have a relaxed, easy-to-follow pace. The class can be taken as part of the “Office for the Classroom” series or as a stand-alone class. The other classes in this series are Getting Started with Excel and Getting Started with PowerPoint 

For beginning and advanced users alike…learn the new features of iMovie 09 as well as cinematic techniques like shot selection, storyboarding, and sequencing to shoot and edit like a pro on a budget. Participants will create commercials, short narrative projects, and leave with several project ideas to take back to the classroom.

In this hands-on workshop, teachers and administrators of all grade levels and subjects will learn how to use filmmaking as a tool to engage student learning. Through experiential lessons, participants will learn to shoot, plan, edit and critique film and make connection to their curricula.

Participants will learn:
• The difference between a shots and scenes
• Organize and improve filmmaking with Storyboards
• Experience hands-on how to use video cameras
• (If schedule & resources permit) Edit footage on a video editing program
• Where to find and how to use AFI-produced filmmaking resources and materials for educators

Participants are required to bring a digital video camera and computer connection cables to this workshop.

Begin the day exploring the music making capabilities of GarageBand.  After lunch, we’ll examine Logic, a powerful program to write, edit, record and remix your music. We’ll end the day with a discussion on finding and writing grants and other resources for music education in the classroom.

Prerequisites: ActivStudio abilities in creating flipchart lessons, using camera and video recorder tools, embedding media files, and creating action objects.

Participants will look in more detail at ActivStudio tools and how to use them with ActivSoftware Inspire Edition. Attendees will also use ActivInspire to convert and enhance a premade lesson and begin to plan new and engaging lessons. This is a hands-on working session! Participants should come prepared with an idea and materials for a lesson to be taught in the 2009-10 school year. Bring a flash drive or some other means of saving work created in the lab.

Prerequisites: ActivStudio abilities in creating flipchart lessons and download and editing Promethean Planet flipcharts.

Participants will work on using more advanced features to add interactive and engaging qualities to flipcharts. Practice how to reveal information, create actions, use containers and restrictors, and embed media, documents, and websites. This is a hands-on working session! Participants should come prepared with an idea and materials for a lesson to be taught in the 2009-10 school year. Bring a flash drive or some other means of saving work created in the lab. 
 

Review how to calibrate an ActivBoard, open and save flipcharts, use basic tool functions, Promethean Planet, and the ActivStudio resource library.  Participants will also practice using ActivStudio to plan lessons. This is a hands-on working session!  Participants should come prepared with an idea and materials for a lesson to be taught in the 2009-10 school year. Bring a flash drive or some other means of saving work created in the lab.
