Apply for this exciting seminar to be a member of a premiere network of instructional media & technology leaders within the Archdiocese school system. This three-day hands-on leadership seminar will benefit your school by having an on-site expert in research-based media use with CaliforniaSreaming, as well as access to additional resources and technology training in podcasting and other emerging technologies. For those teachers selected as Fellows, this seminar will be fully underwritten by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Telecommunications Department. Basic technology skills and Administrator approval is required.

Content: The goal of this workshop is to acquaint early childhood teachers and parents with the wealth of children’s picture books and engaging preschool and primary students in read-aloud activities. Handouts will be provided to aid in selection of age-appropriate storybooks promoting cultural diversity. Craft activities to augment the use of these books will be included. Each participant will take home a selection of K-3 books for use in the classroom or in your home.

The workshops presented in this strand will focus on the use of technology to support visual arts or performing arts.

We offer the following video editing programs in our workshops: iMovie 09, FinalCut Express, Adobe Premiere, and MovieMaker.

Photostory 3.0 is a free download from Microsoft. In this class you'll learn how to develop a digital narrative using still images and your own voice.

Editing on a PC? Look for Everyone's a MovieMaker (Movie Maker XP) MovieMaker is a free digital editing program that comes on your PC. Or, if you are looking for an easy to use program to enhance your videos with professional style, sign up for Adobe Premiere Elements (XP) (John Chambers)

In the performing arts area, we offer GarageBand or Mixcraft for music creation and audio editing. Look for Getting Started with GarageBand in the Classroom (Mac). On the XP side, we'll offer Mixcraft, also referred to as "Garageband for the PC". We are blending our iMovie 09 video editing class with the Lights, Camera, Learn class to help teachers learn the art of film making for the classroom. The result is a two day workshop you won't want to miss. Look for Video Production: Process & Technique. In this class, you'll learn the "visual grammar" of film makers, study the unique narrative cues that filmmakers use for camera placement, production design, and editing. You'll also use iMovie 09 to edit your own film. Mathew Needleman and Frank Guttler are teaming to teach this hands on class.

How can you assist the students in your classroom who need to master academic content and learn to speak English simultaneously? Curious about how you can use technology tools in your classroom to assist your students? Explore how mp3 players, document cameras, and digital cameras can be used to empower your students.

Digital video is easy to do with either Movie Maker or iMovie. Both these programs are free. Movie Maker comes already installed on all Windows PCs and iMovie comes installed on all Macs. Participants at this workshop will storyboard, film and edit a short video project for the classroom. 

 Google Docs are web based productivity tools that can be used to create and share information with colleagues, business associates, students or anyone.  The focus of the workshop will be on exploring how to use Google Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations and Forms  to design, collaborate, write, analyze, present, create forms and manage a wealth of information in an online environment. The tools work interchangeably with Microsoft Office tools and include a chat feature that allows users to collaborate in real-time.

Google has created a suite of free web applications that can help teachers integrate technology into their curriculum. In this course participants will find examples of innovative ways to use these tools in the classroom to empower students. The focus of Google Tools for Educators will be in a selected curricular focus such as language arts, social studies or mathematics.

Educators use Inspiration® software to customize instruction, achieve standards, assess student projects and energize learning. Inspiration® applies visual learning methodologies that engage students' learning in language arts, science and social studies and support planning and thinking. This training will deliver resources to help you start using Inspiration® with confidence and creativity. Participants will receive a free 30 day trial disk of Inspiration.

Do you have an Interwrite Pad/Board  or MOBI (eInstruction product line) and want to utilize it to its full potential? Are you looking for innovative ways to reach your EL Learners, extra support students or Special Ed students? This workshop is a must! After learning the ins and outs of Interwrite Workspace software, participants will then learn strategies to differentiate their instruction in order to make connections with ALL students and how to integrate their district adopted digital curriculum. Collaboration with colleagues throughout LA county on the best practices for interactive technology will be integrated throughout the training.

This workshop is also recommended for schools and districts interested in purchasing interactive boards and tablets and are in need of the hands-on experience in order to make that decision. Loaner pads available upon request. Now’s the time! Attend the workshop that everyone’s talking about!

The CTAP Level 1 Technology Proficiency Academy is open to public-school certificated K-12 classroom teachers, certificated non-classroom teachers and school administrators. Level 1 is for teachers who need to learn the basics of the computer, or have had limited exposure to the basic computer programs, such as those found in Microsoft Office, Internet, E-mail, and Information Literacy.

The academy is a set of easy-paced, no pressure classes, over four days, where the participants learn programs that they could use with their students, or help them be more productive in their classroom.

Day 1 deals with basic computer terms regarding hardware and software and the basic operations of the computer, such as saving and organizing files. We also do hands-on activities such as making a name tent and writing a letter, where participants get to learn about the toolbars and menu functions. We then end the day working with Inspiration, which is a popular mind-mapping program.

Day 2 deals with word processing and publishing, where the participant applies the skills learned from Day 1 to make flyers and newsletters. This is a great day because the teachers tend to apply what they learn in this class to something they could use immediately to communicate with their students' parents. Participants also learn about E-mail basics and the Web site iSafe, which deals with Internet safety for students.

Day 3 Deals with Information Literacy and Internet Skills. Participants discuss ways to evaluate information on the Web, and learn how to search the Web more efficiently. Participants that day also make a photo montage using either Movie Maker or iMovie, which is a nice and quick way to show pictures of their students' activities throughout the year, and are shown how to turn that montage into a Podcast.

Day 4 is the day participants learn about databases and spreadsheets, using Microsoft Excel. We start the day with a fun hands-on activity to learn to use Excel to write formulas and make charts, and we finish the day learning how to use the mail merge feature to write form letters. We also learn presentation software, particularly PowerPoint. We start with the basics and make a complete slideshow, and if someone already has experience and wants to expand, we have advanced directions for them as well.

Keep in mind that the Level 1 Proficiency Academy is a class where you don't need any prerequisites- we've had teachers take the class with little computer skills- and that's who the class is designed for. But this class would also benefit those some experience in the mentioned programs who want to refresh their skills or perhaps learn a new program.

• Session 1: SMART™ Board Basic Session
  This is a beginning workshop for teachers who are starting to use or who are interested in using a SMART™ Interactive Whiteboard.
• Session 2: SMART™ Board Intermediate Session
  This is an intermediate workshop for teachers who are ready to take their SMART™ Board Interactive Whiteboard skills to the next level. In this workshop you will learn how to use advanced features such as grouping, layering, and linking. We will also discuss how to add audio and video to create a true multimedia lesson.
• Session 3: SMART™ Internet Resources
  This workshop offers participants a chance to explore websites created specifically for educators where they can download SMART Notebook lessons, Power Points, and other exciting resources to use in conjunction with their SMART Board.
• Session 4: Differentiating Instruction with SMART™
  In this session you will learn multiple ways to differentiate instruction using the SMART Board and Notebook Software. In addition to learning techniques to differentiate whole class instruction, you will also learn how to differentiate a SMART Board center that can be used across the curriculum.
• Session 5: SMART™ Subject-Specific Make and Take
  This is an advanced session offered only to those who have attended both the basic and intermediate session and are consistently using the SMART Board
  In this session you will learn new ways to use the SMART Board in your specific subject area. The presenter will showcase several curriculum examples, and then provide you time to work on a specific lesson integrating some of the highlighted techniques into you subject area. At the end of the session, participants will share their lessons with the rest of the class.
• Session 6: SMART™ Classroom Management.
  Learn ways to use the SMART Board for all your classroom management needs. At the end of this session you will have a template for each of the following: seating chart, attendance/lunch count, transitions, homework, and sub plans.

You may take any or all of the six day training. If you take all six classes, you will receive a Smart Power User Certificate and be elegible to submit your lesson for the SMART Exemplary Educator Program.

The Web 2.0 Tools for Educators strand will focus on web based tools to enhance teaching.  Discover the power of the web and use subscription free, web based tools in your own classroom. There are hundreds of web based tools that are designed for creating multimedia, writing, editing movies, developing oral language, playing music, critical thinking  and more.  The tools address a variety of content areas that can be used to enhance your teaching and support EL learners.
